Lesson 46 – Learn European Portuguese With Music
Explore Portuguese artist Miguel Araújo and his song Os Maridos das Outras. Listen to this lesson to discover why he claims that men are ruff (os homens são brutos), ugly (os homens são feios), and not very smart (são muito pouco astutos).
Lesson 47 – European Portuguese With an Auto Mechanic
In this visit to the mechanic, you will explore car-related vocabulary and learn o que se passa ali (what’s going on there). One of the parts was really broken (uma das peças estava mesmo avariada). Plus, he says the parts for our car aren’t the cheapest (as peças para o seu carro não são as mais baratas).
In fact, they have to be original parts (para o seu carro tem que ser tudo de origem). He says he still has to connect it to the machine and it won’t be today (eu ainda tenho que o ligar à maquina ainda não é hoje). Still, we need the car for next week (para a semana que vem).
Lesson 48 – Why 31 is Not a Good Number for European Portuguese Speakers
Paulo, our mechanic on Stream Street (Rua da Ribeira) was on vacation (estava de férias). We received a discount to the mechanic in the avenue (um desconto para o mecânico na avenida). Turns out it (Afinal de contas aquilo) was a scam. Never again (Nunca mais)!
If it were only the delay (se fosse só a demora era uma coisa)… But whenever Tiago speaks to him (mas cada vez que o Tiago fala com ele), he finds something else to fix. That is (que é como quem diz), he finds a few extra euros to cash in on (mais uns euros para o bolso dele). Marlon knows who he is (Está a ver quem é), and says: “Next time, you know.” (Para a próxima já sabem).
Lesson 49 – Speaking Through the Elbows in European Portuguese
With an emphasis on different verb tenses, this lesson introduces a unique Portuguese idiom. We are shopping for clothing items Tiago deems too colorful for his liking (Coloridos demais para o meu gosto).
But, wait a minute (espera aí), isn’t that Sonia’s husband (aquele não é o marido da Sónia)? He is the man who speaks through the elbows (o homem fala pelos cotovelos). We go to the dressing rooms before he sees us (Vamos para os provadores antes que ele nos veja).
