Our Teaching Basis
At Portuguese With Carla & Friends, we don't just teach vocabulary — we engineer language acquisition.
A Different Approach
Most language courses teach you to memorise words and grammar rules. We focus on continuous immersion, grounded in cognitive psychology, that teaches you to think, notice, and feel a new language.
In the sections below, we explain the research and principles behind every choice we make — from the sounds you hear first, to the books we recommend.
The 4 Pillars
These four interconnected foundations underpin everything we build — no flashcard memorisation, no rote repetition. Order matters, and so does the neuroscience behind each step.
Topics First. Then, if you want, you are ready to understand something: Contact before Form. We want you to start with the language before you are given guidelines to understand it. The idea of 'topic' vs 'form': get the meaning across naturally before you focus on grammar.
This is how every native speaker learns their first language. Chunks of meaning are acquired together, stored as units and retrived as units. We use spaced repetition to move chunks to long-term memory through a process called the 'Memory Mastery' module.
Let me show you how sounds really work. Pronunciation can be truly learned by mimicking sounds, not just repeating them. Physical Techniques: We teach many students how to physically produce the sounds required for European Portuguese.
30-Minute Sessions: We limit our lessons to 30 minutes because we've exploited the science of deliberate practice and focus. Gamification & Rewards: We use 'experience points' and other incentives to trigger habit formation — keeping your motivation high and rewarding real results.
Core Techniques
No single method works alone. Together strategy, these techniques have been validated by decades of cognitive research and refined through thousands of hours with real learners.
| The Technique | How It Works | The Scientific Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| High-Focus Productive Intake | Learners engage with audio, video or reading material above their current level, supported by context clues and visual support. | Pushes acquisition beyond the known, activates deeper neural encoding and builds tolerance for ambiguity — the hallmark of advanced speakers. |
| Reactive Dictation & Intuition ID | Learners react to language in real time — identifying familiar patterns without conscious analysis. | Bypasses cognitive overload and trains the implicit memory system critical for fluency. |
| Multi-Staged Exposure | A sentence, dialogue or concept is introduced in layers — first for gist, then for detail, then for production. | Matches the brain's natural cycle of pattern recognition, working memory encoding, and long-term retrieval. |
| Shadowing & Accent Mastery | Learners simultaneously listen to and repeat native-level audio, matching pace, rhythm and intonation exactly. | Activates mirror neurons and proprioceptive memory, physically encoding the motor programme required for authentic pronunciation. |
| Transcriptional Exercises | You are tasked with transcribing — in real time — what you hear, even if you don't understand it. | Sharpens phonetic discrimination and strengthens the connection between auditory input and written form. |
| Real Context Modulation | All content is drawn from authentic Portuguese life: TV programmes, podcasts, newspaper excerpts, music. | Builds real-world comprehension and sociocultural competence — the dimension most academic syllabuses miss. |
| Micro Learning & Gamification | Lessons are structured in short, high-intensity bursts (typically 10–20 minutes) with points, streaks, and progress milestones. | Aligns with cognitive load theory and the neuroscience of dopamine-driven motivation loops. |
| Periodic Reviews | Structured revision cycles revisit prior material at expanding intervals — daily, weekly, monthly. | Implements the spacing effect: the most powerful memory technique identified in experimental psychology. |
Validated by Experts
We've shared our methodology with language teachers, applied linguists, and cognitive scientists. Here's what they say.
"This approach reflects the most current research in SLA. The emphasis on comprehensible input before explicit grammar is exactly what the evidence supports."
Matthew T.
Applied Linguistics Professor
"I've reviewed dozens of online language courses. Portuguese With Carla stands out because every decision — from lesson length to audio selection — is research-backed."
Dr. A. Jones
Language Education Researcher
"The pronunciation training alone puts this above anything else I've seen for European Portuguese. The phoneme-placement focus is exactly what learners need."

The Architecture of Our Approach
Our teaching basis draws from peer-reviewed research and landmark books across three disciplines. Every technique we use traces back to one or more of these sources.

I had quite a large vocabulary after years of classes, but I couldn't even utter a single sentence. Although I could understand written Portuguese, I couldn't speak. For the first time, I feel motivated to learn and actually use the language.— Bridget
