Lesson 35 – Portuguese With Carla
In this audio lesson, our characters get a surprise visit at the door. You will learn how to handle the delivery man (in a linguistic sense of course) in European Portuguese. Our friend Miguel is also back on this episode to help us out.

C – Eu lavo a louça e tu secas. Pode ser?
M – Sim, deixa-me só levar o cão à rua.
C – Parece-me ser o carteiro. O que é que mandaste vir desta vez?
M – Eu não comprei nada!
C – Alguma coisa é, se fosse só uma carta ele tinha metido na caixa do correio.
M – Deixa ver…
Carteiro – Bom dia.
M – Boas!
Carteiro – Olhe, tenho aqui uma encomenda para o seu vizinho mas acho que não está ninguém em casa. Importa-se que eu a deixe consigo?
M – Com certeza. Eu entrego a caixa assim que ele chegar.
Carteiro – Assine aqui em baixo por favor.
M – Já está!
Carteiro – Muito agradecido.
M – Ora essa, não tem de quê!

“Se fosso só” If it *were* only. English has a subjunctive too and this is about the only common remaining use of it. The use is a mark of the educated English speaker. Using “was” jars horribly. Whilst probably the majority of English people will not use it correctly, many will.
Other uses, such as “if the dog sit on the cat” are less common and probablyly slightly archaic.
